Cascade Summer is the story of Bob Welch’s 2011 attempt, along with his brother-in-law, to hike the 452-mile length of Oregon’s mountainous spine. To reconnect with his past. And to better understand 19th-century Cascade Range advocate John Waldo, the state’s answer to California naturalist John Muir. Despite great expectations, near trail’s end Welch finds himself facing an unlikely challenge. Laughs. Blisters. And new friends from literally around the world—his PCT adventure offered it all. But he never foresaw its bittersweet ending
Cascade Summer My Adventure on Oregon Pacific Crest Trail eBook Bob Welch
I give this five stars as a day hiker who has enjoyed hiking short segments of the PCT, and believing the book will be of greatest interest to readers who are either hikers (or would-be hikers) or who have a familiarity with Oregon. Bob Welch writes a fascinating adventure where the readers gets to feel the pain, enjoy the humor, share the camaraderie and benefit from the faith and family that Bob did. Each day on the PCT is a chapter, beginning with the vital statistics -- day and mile on the Oregon PCT, number of miles hiked the previous day, average daily mileage, etc. -- and then sharing the adventure of that day, including what was going through his mind at the time. The afterword (or was it epilogue?) is worth reading, as well, where Bob shares what he packed those many miles, a Harper's Index-like report of the hikes' many numbers and such.Product details

Cascade Summer My Adventure on Oregon Pacific Crest Trail eBook Bob Welch Reviews
I have read several books on the Pacific Crest Trail but this was the best one so far that describes the Oregon portion of the trail. I was able to get a very clear picture of what it would be like to hike the trail through Oregon. As an added bonus I learned a lot about Waldo who championed to save Oregon's wilderness. It was a great combination of history and experience. I enjoyed the book.
An incredible adventure at any age. I loved his use of Waldo’s journal of his expeditions into the pristine Cascades in the late 1900s. This was no small accomplishment for the author or his hiking companion Glenn. As with many difficult projects in life, one has to put one foot in front of the other every day and damn the mosquitos. I was physically exhausted by the end of their journey but felt some of the satisfaction and joy they shared. A wonderful read.
Well...on with the criticism...
Much of this book, it seemed to me, was a commercial for Apple products, particularly the iPhone. Far too often during the commentary Mr. Welch seemed to find it necessary to point out what device he was employing instead of using generic terms for devices such as "GPS" instead of iPhone, "cell phone" or "phone" instead of iPhone, "shooting a video" instead of iMovie, etc... As it is, I do not know anyone who points out the particular device they are using at any given time unless they are asked, I found it was rather irritating and detracted, somewhat, from my overall enjoyment of the book.
There were other minor irritations in the narrative such as facts not being checked out before the final draft is accepted...such as the fact that Santiam Lodge (the old ski lodge at Hoodoo Ski Bowl) is, indeed, still there, not burned down as the author states. The author's grammar and fact checking were exactly what I expected from a U of O graduate...spot-on! (LOL) And, any first-year engineering student from OSU could have told you that "Duck" tape wouldn't hold anything in place! (again...LOL)
Well...now, on with the praise...
I got the sense that Mr. Welch and Mr. Petersen share an affinity with the Oregon Cascades (especially the Central Oregon Cascades) as I do. I began hiking the PCT when I was 12 years old from Santiam Lodge. I especially enjoyed the time-capsule commentaries from Judge Waldo inserted into the book. I have been to Waldo lake and was fascinated to learn how Waldo lake acquired it's name...among many other natural treasures Oregon is so very blessed with.
Overall, it was an oddly inspiring book that makes me even more determined to get out and hike the beloved trail again. Maybe only little snippets at first...but, hopefully get to do all of the Oregon section (the best section!) and then thru-hike it one day as well.
Overall...an inspiring read!
I purchased this book at first as an e-book for my . Something to read to my husband, as he drove us home from a day of adventure, late on a Sunday night. Bob Welch is only about 10 years older than I and it seemed so real to me...something I could do.I have dreamed of working on the trails of the PCT with my son for a weekend during a summer...camp out and just know that what we did as mother and son would make a difference for the hikers. We both love the outdoors.I have read other books of Bob Welch and I really wanted to follow this journey that he and his Brother-in-Law (not to mention their families). After being diagnosed with MS...My dreams may be realized only by reading the words on the pages of "Cascade Summer". Reading this book of ordinary men and the people they met along the way made me feel I can still realize this dream. There are people along the way who want and are willing to assist in anyway possible. I may have to take my hike in smaller steps than these "Ordinary Men", but that is ok, because Bob Welch a devout "Born and Bred Oregonian" who allowed Cisco and Roadrunner to "show them the way" in the snow, as to not lose the trail.....since reading the book on my e-reader I have attended a "Beachside Writers" conference. Fifty-two folks from all over, who gather in Yachats, Oregon to learn about so much more than writing. At this conference I purchased the Feel it in your hands, hear the pages turn, smell the life of a book, version of "Cascade Summer". I didn't need to, but how was I going to share, not to mention make sure I got my back when I loaned the book to a friend, family member or for that matter a complete strange my copy of "Cascade Summer"? I not only purchased the this wonderful book, but the Author, Mr. Bob Welch signed it for me. He wrote a book that makes you feel you can do exactly what he did and for that matter anything you want to do. The message was to me, take down whatever walls you put up and go for it....what do you have to lose??? Not everyone wants to hike the PCT, but everyone has a dream and he gives you proof that you too can live those dreams!
