I'm not a "professional" reviewer so bear with me please. I've been looking for a book that would teach me all the steps to growing healthy herbs. I don't just want to know what they are for and how to preserve them. I want to know exactly how much water they need, how much light, all the little tricks you can use to keep them healthy and happy for as long as possible. This book is that book. Indoor, outdoor or even in a greenhouse this book tells it all.
Now to find one exactly like it for everything else! (I'll be checking this authors other books!)
I like the way this book is organized abd how clear the information appears. I am starting a herb garden in Maine this year and have found it very helpful.
The basic practical information is great. The botanical prints add character. Written as if you are having a chat with a fellow gardener. Love the tidbits on what to do with the herbs once they are harvested. And the detail on when they should be harvested. And how to divide. Appreciate the little quotes from the old herbals; I know it took extra time for Mr. Green to include them but they add a bit of fun to the book. I'll do some adjusting for our Texas climate but I know I'll be referring back to this little book
Doug hits it on the head again in his inimitable, easy-to-read style.
In 3 minutes I discovered why my herb box looks so unhappy too much fertilizer,
wrong kind of mulch, not enough sun and why, oh why am I growing herbs I never use?
And all done with a great sense of humor. Best bargain in town. and delivered
instantly to my on-line . WOW!
I expect some details on how to grow herbs but they are not provided in this book. Maybe because there are too numerous herbs to provide the info. Overall, there are some tips which are not revealed in other sources which could be from actual experience of the author.
Great advice from a wise and very experienced gardener. Full of easy to follow tips and advice. I love Doug Green. He has given the most practical and reasonable gardening info I have ever encountered. He helps you to have a wonderful garden, but not to stress about it. Buy this and all Doug's books if you want to enjoy gardening!
Excellent short e-book. Not an encyclopedia, but a good beginners guide to herb gardening. What is especially nice is that rather that the normal rosy book where nobody makes mistakes, he runs through limitations of different types of herbs. This helps explain where to plant, and why if you plant in the wrong place you won't get what you want.
